WHAT:  After this Murdoc realised the children (and staff) of Hogwarts were in dire need of swimming lessons.
STATUS: Ongoing

[GATHER AROUND CHILDREN it's a warm summer day and the lake is perfect for diving into your sudden but inevitable deaths. You should all be dressed in your swimming trunks (which you clearly have don't even lie) because Murdoc sure is. He's determined to conduct this in the best manner he can, though he wasn't quite expecting the turn out to be so large. People who can swim are welcome to become his assistants because he could probably use the help.]

Seems a rather silly way to keep people in line. Most students don't seem to care until the last few weeks.

I suppose it's supposed to serve as a slap on the wrist for some students, but they have to be the type who does see it as a negative, like you said.

A lot of them tend to laugh it off. There isn't much team spirit unless we're playin' sport or we're winnin' somethin'.

Yes I know... [Maxim is one such student] even some of the ones who get detention don't seem to learn. And then half the time, we're hating each others houses, for old wrongs. I imagine it must be even harder for professors to deal with, because you interact with so much more of us than the average student would.

You're right on the money there, trust me. Detention is more like a chore for the professors than the students at times.

But you do get some who learn from their mistakes, don't you Professor? So there's something there. And Mr Filch is always glad for the cleaning help I hear.

On occasion. The pros very rarely outweigh the cons, so it is good to see students so willin' to go out of their way to assist us. [Smirk.] He does, though he doesn't enjoy their company when it's forced upon him.

See, you just have to look at the positives at times! [Laugh] Well he's always been like that. I don't think I've ever seen him smile.

I've been trained to be cautious with optimism. [Smirk.] I wouldn't be terribly plucky if I were him.

Is that something all Auror's are trained in or a special skill? [Chuckle] I suppose it would help if we didn't have so many troublemakers in such a small space.

Most Aurors tend to end up that way, at least. Perhaps I'm just glorifyin' the past, but I'm quite certain I wouldn't have gotten away with the behaviour we let slip these days.

Perhaps our generation is just more daring in attempting the things that they do. Not that that is a good thing though.

I imagine there's a few logical explanations. I've a question for you, Miss Serket, what are your opinions on corporal punishment?

I don’t think it’s the most effective method to be truthful. I think it outgrew its usefulness many years ago and would even consider it barbaric today.
