"Whatever. I'm not really hungry," Herbert said. already shoveling his textbook into his bag. "You can, though. Bring food, I mean."

Shrugging, Kurloz grabbed a couple of pasties and gathered up his writing gear before standing to follow Herbert.

The smaller boy headed out of the Great Hall with a purposeful stride, which was better than running like he was trying to make a mistake. He relaxed a little once they got out of the room, though, slowing a bit.

"Sorry," he muttered, then sighed, pinching his nose under his glasses and glancing up at Kurloz. "It doesn't really matter where we go, wherever you like. I just. I didn't want to be in there any more."

He felt weak and stupid for saying it, but there it was.

Kurloz wasn't one for lots of physical contact, but Herbert deserved a pat on the back for that, along with a sympathetic look. Kurloz glanced around and pointed at a window ledge tucked away from the busier castle halls, giving Herbert a waiting look to see if the boy would agree to the choice or not.

The smaller boy nodded, heading over to the window ledge and sliding up onto it, setting his bag to the side. He settled corss-legged, waiting for Kurloz to join him.

"I'm sorry. This is stupid, isn't it?"

Kurloz shook his head, setting out his writing things and charming the quill again as he sat by Herbert.

nah - you're just joining every other teenage fucker.

"I'd rather not, thanks," Herbert said, rather sourly. "Is there a way to opt out? ... you never seem to have a problem with any of this."

got 99 problems and a bitch ain't one.

Grinning, Kurloz shrugged and shook his head, taking a bite out of his pasty.

been a bit too out of being all sociable and shit to be all tangled up in that sorta stuff. used to angst about it a bit but keep calm and carry the motherfuck on yeah?

"I wish," Herbert said gloomily, looking down at his hands resting loosely on his ankles. "Loads more sensible that way. Fancying anyone is just a distraction, anyway, I don't see what good can come of it. I might see if I can find a potion that turns those sorts of things off. Attraction and love are mostly hormonal processes, anyway."

now that's just a recipe for some motherfucking lonely as disaster.

Wrinkling his nose, Kurloz shook his head before continuing:

it's not all bad anyway. you can't say kissing's shit.

Herbert coughed out another of those dry, barking laughs. "Why not? Maybe it's all rainbows and puppies with someone who actually gives a damn about you, but my experiences with kissing are with two people who were just using me as an experiment and stopped talking to me after, I guess because I was so bad or maybe just so completely underwhelming, and with one person who only tried because he was under the influence of a love potion. As soon as that wore off, he got together with the person I would actually really like to kiss, so I'm not exactly sold on the whole process."

Scratching his cheek, Kurloz munched on his pasty thoughtfully, gathering paint under his nails.

so you ain't never got a kiss what made you all fucking warm and good inside?

Herbert didn't say anything for a moment. He had, he'd found it utterly electrifying when he kissed Eriq, his best friend at the time. He'd enjoyed it so much that he'd kept trying to do it with the other boy, keeping himself blind to the fact that Eriq never initiated, only allowed him to do it. And of course, it had made everything hurt so, so much worse when he found out the other boy had actually had a girlfriend the whole time, and had just been stringing Herbert along. The betrayal had wrecked the most important friendship he'd ever had beyond repair.

"It's not worth it," he said quietly.

Kurloz's face wasn't pitying and it wasn't amused any more. He looked as saddened as he felt at the thought that Herbert had already decided some of the nicer comforts of human contact weren't worth the heartache.

That's just wrong in his book.

"Try what?" Herbert asked, glancing up again and looking confused. "There isn't anything anyone can do, it's not a wound, it's just ... my own stupidity. Every time I've known better, I just wanted to believe- ... well, it doesn't matter. As I said, it's all a distraction, anyway."

Rolling his eyes, Kurloz waved his wand at his own face, causing the makeup to vanish. Sure, he'd want to re-apply it later but for now he figured it'd be best not to leave black and white all over Herbert's face.

He lifted his hands and slowly brought them closer to Herbert's face, giving the boy ample time to pull away if he wanted to.

Herbert went still, though not because he fully understood what was going on - it was mainly because he was suprised to see that behind all that make-up, Kurloz was actually really, really good looking. It wasn't something he'd ever considered about the other boy, and it startled him now (and made him just a little bit jealous).

As Kurloz raised his hands, Herbert began, "What are you- ?" but cut himself off, because it was perfectly obvious what the younger boy was doing, just not why.

"I don't see how this is going to fix anything," he said instead, but his voice was quiet, and a little lost. He didn't know - it wasn't like the Slytherin was some boy who really cared deeply about him or wanted him. This was probably a pity snog, and that felt a little pathetic and sad. But then Herbert had been spending a lot of time feeling pathetic and sad lately; what was one more time?

Kurloz gave Herbert enough time to read his next message, thumb stroking under the other boy's eye gently.

this here brother's gonna be getting a mack on you, motherfucker, because i'm your friend and friends should make friends feel fucktons better whenever, right?

As Kurloz leaned in, he grinned cheekily, winking at Herbert and his magic flared for just an instant to let his voice purr in the boy's mind:

That effort would probably leave him with a headache later, but enough of that! His lips honed in on Herbert's as he pressed them together to start chaste and gentle, hands staying cupped around the boy's cheeks.

Herbert's eyes flicked down to the message, then back to the Slytherin's face. He opened his mouth to say something, possibly about the whole 'friends-with-benefits' not being something he was really into, or maybe that he didn't want Kurloz's pity, when he heard the voice in his mind, and he was surprised into silence. His breath caught in his throat, because the other boy hadn't even used his wand, and no one thought he was cute, and then he was being kissed, and so all of that became pretty much entirely irrelevant.

He probably shouldn't have responded. It was just going to be another case of something that went nowhere, but ... even if Kurloz wasn't really interested in him like that, he was at least being honest about this. He obviously wasn't trying to fuck with Herbert, and he wasn't pretending this was anything other than it was, and for that, the smaller boy was grateful.

So he did respond, tipping his head slightly to one side and parting his lips just a little as he kissed back, hands resting on his thighs, not sure what he should be doing with them.

Kurloz began to slowly amp up the kiss, lightly grazing his teeth along Herbert's lips as his fingers skimmed over the smaller boy's cheekbones. He smiled as Herbert began to respond, happy to see the boy was actually taking part rather than just letting it happen.

His hands slowly stroked down Herbert's throat and shoulders, gradually moving down to circle his fingers around the boy's thin wrists, thumbs lightly rubbing over the sensitive inner wrists.

The smaller boy's reactions made it clear that yes, he had kissed other people, but no, he hadn't had a lot of practice - he was a bit clumsy, and hesitant, but Kurloz's slow, gentle movements seemed to be helping ease him into it. His fingers curled lightly into his palms as the younger boy stroked his wrists, and he made a soft, low noise into the Slytherin's mouth. His lips parted further, and experimentally he flicked the tip of his tongue along Kurloz's lower lip.

This was ... nice. More than he expected it to be, really. It helped that the other boy was so non-threatening .. and good looking.

Kurloz took Herbert's clumsiness in stride, snaking his tongue out to stroke along the boy's curious one. His own lips parted readily in open invitation for Herbert to explore, should he want to, and his hands slipped down further to tangle their fingers together.

The finger twining was an affectionate little detail that shook Herbert for a moment - it was almost too sweet, too much like what a real boyfriend would do, and his cheeks darkened. Of course, this close Kurloz wouldn't be able to see it, so the Ravenclaw was spared some embarrassment, and he closed his eyes fully as he squeezed back a little, his own slender, clever fingers twisting around the Slytherin's. Herbert had a surgeon's hands, slim and graceful where the rest of him was more awkward and stiff.

He knew a bit more about what should be going on with the mouth, though, and he cautiously licked into Kurloz's, tongue slipping past teeth to flit over the Slytherin's tongue, mapping out contours curiously.

Kurloz's long, near spindly fingers were just as graceful, an artist's hands that allowed him to fluidly form the signs to let him communicate. For now they squeeze gently around Herbert's, using them to tug the boy closer to him. As the Ravenclaw's tongue began exploring his mouth, Kurloz sighed happily, sucking at the organ to coax Herbert into being bolder.

Herbert made another soft sound, going up onto his knees as he was tugged forward. He took the invitation, kissing Kurloz more deeply, and therefore more clumsily, though part of him was complaining internally, What do you think you're doing? This is just going to end up being frustrating and it's not like you even fancy him, even if he is very attractive. What's the point? The rest of him, though, didn't really care what the point was, because it felt nice and it was something that didn't make him feel bitter or hurt or sad.
