WHAT: Bro has thrown a surprise party for Murdoc in his office and invited everyone.

[Having a boyfriend whose birthday is on Valentine's day is beautiful. It's beautiful and Murdoc definitely doesn't understand why. But to Bro, it's beautiful. Because it means that when he throws Murdoc a surprise party, he can get away with using the most horrendous pink decorations that he possibly can. Of course, they're not all pink. Some are purple! The shade of purple that Murdoc likes the most. There are hearts hanging from the ceiling and there's a giant poster that says 'Happy Birthday Murman' hanging on the wall. In the corner there is a playpen set up for anyone who might have decided to bring their snakes. It was a spur of the moment decision and he isn't quite sure how it's going to work out, but hey. At least the snakes have somewhere to play.

But the most standout thing in the room has gotta be a cake. Bro went all out and made a lifesized cake for the occasion. It's chocolate, and it's as tall as a goddamn person. It... looks special, though. It's kind of lopsided, and the icing's thickness is sporadic. And it looks like he might've ran out of icing towards the bottom, because it's definitely not as delicious as the top.

Overall, it could have turned out worse. It does look like it could fall over at any moment, though.

And who even really knows how it tastes.

That isn't the point though! The point is everything is beautiful and it's time for the best party you ever did see.]

[Jane pokes her cake with her fork, just for something to do and look at and keep her mind off of how frustratingly attractive Dirk has apparently grown in the past. Week.]

It is all a bit awkward, isn't it?

[It is amazing how quickly you can realize that someone is, in fact, hot. Dirk is suffering through the same thing.]

Yeah. Uh, Be right back.

[And time to get them punch! And also to take another moment to stop blushing.]

[Jane leans up against a wall and slumps a little, eyes rolling up to the ceiling.

It is quickly becoming clear that she is incapable of just being friends with cute boys. She is the worst sort of person, it's her. All. Sex-crazed and dopey. Augh.]

[It doesn't take long for Dirk to get some punch- still not spiked, thank god, if it was this could get so much worse.

When he comes back, he pauses upon seeing Jane leaning against the wall.]

You sure you're okay?

[Jane straightens up a little, sighing.]

Oh, it's just-- you know, Valentine's. The usual feelings of self-consciousness one feels at a party with the added bonus of being single and, therefore, undesireable. At least so long as nobody's been spiked with a love potion, I suppose.

[Another sigh.]

[As long as no one's been spiked with a love potion, oops. Not that he knows.]

Yeah, I get it. It's a pretty fucking stupid holiday, most of the time.

[He pauses for a moment, holding out one of the cups to Jane.]

Being single doesn't mean undesirable, though.

[Jane takes the cup and laughs bitterly. Coming from him, she finds it hard to take that sentiment.]

Maybe not in your case. You've got the Strider, uh, swag? Whatever that word is. I am not so endowed.

[Well, okay, she's endowed, but not in ways she's particularly proud of.]

Trust me, Strider swag doesn't do as much as it seems. [Unless Strider Swag is considered to be 'hey there is veela in my bloodline. He rests a hand on Jane's arm.]

Trust me when I say that you're appreciated.

[She waves a hand.]

I know you and Jake and everyone care. It's just not in the Valentines-y way and, well, a girl wishes, sometimes. That's all.

[--- wait, that didn't come out nearly as subtle as he intended it to. Shit. He's going to turn away from Jane for a moment, because his face is. Well. Completely scarlet.]

[Jane's eyes widen and she actually brings them up to-- well, where Dirk's face was. Now it's just the side-back of his head and what she can see of his neck is awfully red, she thinks. From anger? Maybe?

Her stomach twists at the thought of choosing.]

D-do you know something I don't know Dirk?

[Fuck. He's supposed to be a coolkid. He's too cool to get caught stammering and blushing like this... except when he accidentally almost confesses, apparently.]

[Jane can't help it, she just blurts:]

Then could you tell me? I-I mean, if it isn't too painful.

[Dirk doesn't do anything for a long moment. When he finally does move, he takes a deep breath before turning to Jane. His face is bright red.]

Okay. I'm saying that I care. And that it might be.

I'm not blind, Dirk! You can't possibly like him and me! I mean...

[She bites her tongue, holding back the self-deprecating why would you like me when you could have him stuff, at least for now.]

It's not a 'just one or the other' thing, Jane. Just because I don't like most girls doesn't mean I can't like you.

But I'm-- me!

[That didn't last long. Jane covers her mouth, then her whole face. God, she can't believe herself sometimes.]

What does that have to do with it?

I'm not...I mean, Jake's handsome! I understand why you like him! But me...

[She can't understand that.

Which is probably why she's never really gone after Jake either.]

What? No, Jane, you're beautiful.

[To be honest, it's something he'd say even if he weren't under the influence of a love potion. She is, even if he's not the kind of guy who can appreciate that properly.]

[Jane shakes her head, face still hidden in her hands.]

I know we're friends and you're just trying to be nice but...but saying you could have feelings for me just feels like a prank and not the good kind!
