Yes, of course, be on the look-out of the tell-tale signs of someone with a secret tunnel in their basement. You can probably tell from their shoes.

[John smiled.]

Come on, then, I know a short-cut to the Three Broomsticks.

You're not too far off, John.

[Obviously sarcasm has yet to have registered. He follows John.]

[It was fond sarcasm this time, though, so Sherlock's failure to grasp it this time just made John grin as they made their way to the pub.]

Oh? How so?

[3potionproblem]

Well, surface dirt is different from subterranean dirt in its coloration and composition. Be much easier if it had rained in the last 24 hours but there are still minor tells.

[Sherlock kept looking around, taking the area in.]

Don't think I'll ever get over how impressive it is that you can see all that in a pair of grubby boots.

[One turn later and there was the Three Broomsticks, already nearby.]

[Sherlock looked away to hide his smile.]

Well, if you pay attention, maybe you'll learn something.

Hm, maybe. It's probably got a downside too, though. I don't think I want to be able to immediately deduce what my sister gets up to half the time, for example.

[He held the pub's door open for them to enter.]

Perhaps. I've deduced a few things in my life that I would rather not have had the eyes and mind to see. But I can't turn it off. No gift is without its price.

[Sherlock looked around at the room as they walked in, not surprised to see so many students there but rather interested in the details of the building.]

You say it that way and now I'm even afraid to ask.

[He peered through the crowd of students, looking for an empty table. Upon seeing one, he turned to Sherlock, noticing the way he was taking in the building.]

There are a couple of seats in the corner back there. What d'you think of the place?

Then don't ask.

[Easy enough. Sherlock walked over to the back corner with a nod of appreciation. It would do quite well. He dug in his pocket and held out several gold galleons.]

Certainly no lack of local colour here. Don't bother with your own money. My allowance affords for far more luxuries than I entertain.

[John might not be a genius with amazing deductive ability, but he knew a sore subject when he heard one. He decided not to press.]

Thanks. I don't like debts or taking advantage, though, so next time's on me.

It's hardly taking advantage. I probably have several hundred stashed away in my room from six years of unused allowance. I can't possibly spend that much on myself.

[Sherlock made himself comfortable in one of the wood chairs. It may be his money but you are expected to get it for him, John.]

S-several hun- [John's voice may have cracked in sheer shock.] Several hundred? Just... just lying around? How does - how on earth - what?

[Needless to say he was a little too shocked to go get lunch quite yet.]

I’m rich. Obvious. Well, I thought it was obvious. Could you not tell just by looking at me?

What do you see then when you look at me?

Sorry. I've just never seen more than around 15 galleons in one place before. Money is tight in my family, even before you convert any of it to wizard currency.

Well, when you phrase it like that, of course it's obvious that you're rich. Nice, well-tailored robes and the like. And the way you talk, it's clear you come from a posh family. But I suppose I must forget about it a bit, since you're more interesting than just being some rich and fancy bloke.

[Sherlock half snorted at that.]

You can have what we don’t manage to use by the end of the year. They used to try and give me just short of what they figured was enough to run away by so I’d have to stay put. Now I get enough that, given the likely scenario that I do runaway regardless, I have more than enough to keep me until they can round me up again. I plan to stay put, though, so someone may as well use it.

Well, I'm glad you've decided to stay put and I really am flattered by the offer, but I won't take you up on it. I'd rather get my money through my own work. Know that I earned it, you know?

[He grinned.]

That said, I think my dignity can handle taking you up on your offer to cover lunch today.

Well, we wouldn’t want to hurt your dignity.

It's stronger than it looks. Survived a fair few swings that have been hurled at it.

I'll go place the order. What d'you want?

I'm sure. Indomitable John Watson.

[Which isn't exactly said sarcastically. John did overcome his limp, after all]

I'm not terribly picky. I expect you know what they make best. Order me that.

[John still wasn't sure of Sherlock's grasp on sarcasm, so he accepted the potential compliment with a tilt of his head and a wry smile. With that, he went off to fetch lunch.

He came back a short while later with a tray of sandwiches and two butterbeers.]

It's been about a year, but I remember these being pretty good.

Oh yeah, before I forget. I listened to the music you enchanted into that message. It was amazing.

[Sherlock nodded at John choice and picked his way through it.]

I'm pleased you liked it. Did it help?

[He'd only played the most difficult piece he knew to show off. So... ya know... he was in no way fishing for this compliment... ^___^]

Yeah, I actually slept pretty well. It sounded rather complicated; I can see how those roommate-irritating 3 A.M. practice sessions pay off.

Well, maybe I'll be able to create a music spell that really does put people to sleep. And then they can stop complaining.

[He sipped his butterbeer, wiping off his foamy mustache.]

The nightmares: are they specific to the night of your attack or more generalized?

[John's hands tightened a bit on his mug as he looked down at the foam on his own drink. For a moment, his lips formed into a tight line and his brow furrowed. Vulnerability and grim determination mixed into one expression.]

When I remember them, they're very specific. Very vivid, like it's still happening and all this is the dream. But sometimes my mind's blank and I just wake up screaming, covered in sweat and my heart pounding like I just ran a marathon.

[He took a swig from his butterbeer.]

It's been a bit better lately. Not as dramatic as the leg, but...
