Good features like... what, exactly? Can't say I know too many blokes I'd classify as "good" who'd also yank a girl's emotions around for the fun of it.

Not just the fun. I'm sure there was a level of research involved. He's clever. Ambitious. Methodical. Spontaneous.

[Sherlock shrugs his face.]

One is never bored when it comes to him.

If he purposefully went out to manipulate that girl, what makes you think he won't do the same to you?

Trust me, John; I can handle him. I have something she never did: his respect.

This is all beside the point, however. The point had been that I have no interest in engaging in a relationship for scientific purposes alone. I think we can stick to that being enough said on the matter.

[John gave him a slightly skeptical look for a moment, but he eventually just sighed a little and shrugged.]

If you say so. But with how shady you make him sound, if that's the type of bloke you consider a friend, your criteria for companionship is pretty odd.

Though don't get me wrong, I really am glad you don't find it necessary to repeat his actions and see if you get a different outcome.

[Sherlock nodded. As he said, he'd spoken enough on the matter.]

I can always just observe you and your romantic conquest. How your behavior deviates in a relationship from normal John. I'm sure I could present quite interesting graphs and pie charts to demonstrate the facts in a functional means to evaluate her compatibility in regards to your lifestyle and life quality.

[Wait, observation of dates? That sounded an awful lot like... oh God.]

If all that's a long-winded request to follow me on any potential dates I may have, my answer is an emphatic no.

Because, Sherlock, the whole point of a date is to be alone with the other person! Not to know, or even just suspect, that someone is peering at the two of you from the bushes somewhere!

You're observed on dates all the time, I'm sure. Just not by the same person at all points.

Yeah, no, someone glimpsing over at a couple on a date and thinking, "Oh, nice for them" before going back to their own business is not the same thing as someone taking thorough notes the whole time.

This is most disappointing, John. But I suppose the likelihood of you dating straight from the gate is small. We can revisit these parameters when that time comes.

Alright, alright, sounds fair enough. We'll talk about this again once I find someone I'd like to date.

[Sherlock smirks with a little challenge in his lips. John was going to be a tough one but hardly an immovable object.]

So what else does one do in this town?

[John tilts his head in thought.]

Mostly shops and things, but even though it's unlikely this place has changed much or at all since the last time I was here, you never know when it might surprise you. Want to go find out in person what it's got to offer us?

May as well make the most of this trip. Never know when I'll end up in detention again.

[Sherlock smirked and stood up, his food picked at and mostly forgotten.]

[John made a note of how little Sherlock ate and made a mental note to see about improving his eating habits in the future. Sherlock was skinny enough as is, often looking like a stiff wind could blow him away.]

Have you considered not doing some of the things that get you tossed into detention over and over? Just, y'know, as a thought.

You mean like just taking orders and limiting free thought? Honestly, no, I haven't. Doesn't seem likely I will, either.

[He took the lead, holding the door open for him.]

Just because someone doesn't act on every impulse that drifts through their head doesn't mean they don't have free thought.

[John nodded in thanks, going through the door and waiting for Sherlock.]

It's about knowing when to pick your battles.

I've heard of it. How does one know when they're being insubordinate or making a good case, though? It' really rather subjective on the teacher's part.

[Sherlock strolled down the main street, not walking very fast at all.]

It can be a little arbitrary, I admit. But usually if what you're about to say is pretty insulting and personal, it might be best to hold your tongue, especially if you're talking to someone in authority. Generally it's all about picking up on the right social cues.

[Sherlock gave that some thought.]

So any mention of the teacher or his future wive's potential infidelity is to be considered an inappropriate response across the board because it deals with their personal lives?

Are most people so sensitive?

Yeah, that is more or less the definitive example of what not to do. ... and I'm guessing it's not hypothetical at all.

Well, yeah, people are sensitive about things in their life. Can't you think of anything about you you'd rather not have dragged out and discussed?
