[Karkat sat on the bank of the lake, hands shoved deeply into the pockets of the hoodie he wore under his robes as he scowled out at the frozen over lake. Someone had dropped a pair of skates next to him but he hadn't so much as glanced at them since getting here. Whoever had done this was dumb, and they should feel stupid for doing it. Either way, he was not getting out there on the lake. Nope.]

HEY BEST BRO! COME ON OUT MOTHERFUCKER! [hollers from his shaky stance about twenty feet away on the ice. He can't seem to skate for shit, but he has managed to light a cigarette up out here, and it hangs from the corner of his mouth precariously.]

[Oh hell. What the fuck had that idiot been thinking. Obviously not much if the cigarette between his lips is any indication. Karkat gave a small, exasperated sigh and rose from his seat on the bank, staying where he was.]

Fuck no. You get your ass back on dry land right the fuck now!

OH HELL NO! [yells back cheerfully ... really, 20 feet away is too close to be yelling. He does try to make a few swooping steps towards Karkat anyway, and ends up going into a half spin that lands him on his ass on the ice again, honking and cackling like an idiot.]

Help, bro, you gotta rescue me! [Ehehehehehee!]

[God fucking damnit. Letting out a short tirade of curses, Karkat ran down the embankment without thinking, worn out sneakers hitting the ice before he had time to think. Looking back on it later it'd be a question as to what was going through his fucking mind at the time, because shit if he didn't know how to skate either, and as soon as he stepped on the ice he slipped, crashing down onto his back.]

[Which just makes Gamzee laugh harder ... though he does try to get up to come and help Karkat, and winds up falling down for time number seven or something. So he just stays on his ass and starts shoving himself across the ice towards his friend, sniggering.]

Dude. Dude. You peachy? Oh, man, that was motherfuckin' brilliant!

[It took a moment or two for the shock of falling to wear off before the Gryffindor grumbled, feeling cold ice on his back even through the warming charm he had on his clothes. Karkat placed the palms of his hands on the frozen lake beneath him, lifting himself up to glare at the other, voice a low growl that punctuated each word.]

[The look Gamzee gave him back, was for a split second, just ... odd. Weirdly knowing, and far too adult. And then one of the taller boy's huge, goofy grins split his face.] I figured you'd just spell me out, bro ...

[He scowled before snorting, attempting to move in order to get back up from where he'd fallen. When it appeared he couldn't get back up, Karkat just slumped back down on the ice, crossing his arms over his chest.]

What the fuck was I supposed to do? Accio Gamzee? It wouldn't have fucking worked.

Why not? [Gamzee scrambles and slides and skids to get over to Karkat, leaning over him and getting far too much in his personal space, still grinning. His breath frosts the air, and smells of peppermint and chocolate and tobacco.]

[When Gamzee gets close enough, Karkat reaches out, flicking the taller Slytherin's nose with his index finger.]

Laws of physics, dumbass. You're taller and weigh more than me, it would've made me go flying to you.

[Gamzee blinks, pulling his head back sharply, then regains his smile.] That ain't so motherfuckin' bad.

[Then he somehow manages to switch the cigarette from one side of his mouth to the other without touching it, slips behind Karkat, plants his knees on the ice, and scoops the smaller boy up as though it's no big thing, hauling him back to the relatively safety of the snow.]

[He's silently grateful as the other starts dragging him back to shore, crossing his arms over his chest with a small grumble. Gamzee's picked him up a few times before so it's no big deal when he does, and he'd rather be back on the snow regardless, huddled in his blanket cocoon.]

Hey! [GUESS WHAT HERE'S REASON #2 FOR GOING OUT ON THE LAKE. Jade has her skates all ready and is looking chipper as always.] Aren't you coming?

[He just shifts and huddles further into his blanket/hoodie/cloak cocoon, drawing his knees up as he tilts his head to look at her.]

Fuck no, that thing is a fucking death trap.

So you're scared, right? Geeeez, you don't need to be scared. You can just hold onto me and I'll lead!

[Karkat just gives her a deadpanned stare.]

For all I fucking know there's an ambush of merpeople under that shitton of ice. It's only a spell so who knows how long it'll take to wear off.
