[gives what he thinks is his best haughty look, though really, it mostly just looks pinched - he needs to actually practice it in a mirror instead of just giving people aloof glares] Oh, please, Eriq, you've been wanting to do that to me since second year.

[personal profile] eighttimeshandy 2012-08-25 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
[Eriq will be haughty right back, then. And his expression will actually resemble haughty, because he does practice it in the mirror.] Yes, well. That's because such things should be found before they disappear too far up your ahem.

Now, if you'll excuse me... [he will just pick that book Herbert objects to so much back up and add it back to his stack. Anything that includes sex as a cure for anything has GOT to be good for a laugh. And a wank, but he pretends that he's above such things.]
preanimator: (no glasses and pissy)

[Herbert wrinkles up his nose in irritation, both at being so casually dismissed, and because he's a bit jealous of his classmate who can actually afford to buy books just for entertainment value.]

Oh, yes, please excuse me for interrupting your serious and valuable research efforts. [snippily, then looking down at his own slim stack of required books with a scowl]

[personal profile] eighttimeshandy 2012-08-25 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
[....Yeah, that really is a tiny stack of books. It kind of makes him feel vaguely uncomfortable in a way he can't really name.]

You know I'll share them with you, right? [Wow, he really did just blurt that out. Awkward.]
preanimator: (broody)

[Herbert's shoulders hunch in a little, embarrassed at being caught out. He tries not to let it bother him that his family hasn't got a lot of money, and his Muggle mother doesn't see the point of buying books when there's a perfectly good library at school, anyway, but sometimes ... ]

I just told you that book was rubbish, why on earth would I want to read it? [flustered and turning a bit red, not looking at Eriq]
eighttimeshandy: (pic#4597136)

[personal profile] eighttimeshandy 2012-08-25 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
[It's okay, Herbert. He may not have to worry about money, but that doesn't stop his muggle parents from really side-eyeing and questioning everything he brings home. At least Herbert has ONE parent who understands.]

[They definitely don't appreciate his Goliath Birdeater tarantula.]

[These problems are completely unrelated]

Because a laugh isn't going to kill you. And besides, you did add Arcturo's. That one's not hardly rubbish at all.

[Well, no, Herbert doesn't really know his dad, he just lives with his mum. He does, however, have a nutty wizard uncle who gets it, and that's something! If only he got to see him for more than a few weeks in the summer ... ]

That is an excellent text, thank you very much! Very useful, and he includes theory and usage that other authors so short-sightedly leave out because of the 'implications'. [making annoyed air quotes - what he actually means to say is 'Thank you, Eriq, you are a good friend,' but probably some reading between the lines is going to be necessary here.] I used it for two essays and some personal research last year.

[Yay, he did a good thing! For a moment, he might just have grinned like a doofus, but he catches himself quickly and whips that smile off his face, replacing it with a mask of unaffected aloofness]

If it meets your high standards, I simply MUST read it, then. [small, condescending eyeroll] Are there any other texts you INSIST that I must peruse instead of wasting my time on casual japes and tomfoolery?
preanimator: (nerdy smile)

[personal profile] preanimator 2012-08-25 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, since you ask- [Herbert starts, ignoring the sarcasm utterly, and is probably going to babble on happily here about several of what he considers excellent potions texts, as well as pointing out a small, little known philosophical and theoretical treatise on soul magic, demonstrating that he does actually pay attention to what Eriq's interested in, though there'll probably be some convoluted excuse as to why he knows what that book even is, even though it's only peripherally related to his own pursuits.

The boy does actually smile when he talks about books, exposing the little gap between his two front teeth. It's quite odd.]

[personal profile] eighttimeshandy 2012-08-25 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
[That wasn't the reaction he intended, but he hardly has the heart to stop Herbert when he's clearly so thrilled to show off his all his hard-earned knowledge. And also that gap is cute. So he patiently waits for the other boy to finish his ramble, only half-paying attention, even when he mentions the books relevant to his interest because-]

While that's all very nice, Herbert, what I meant was, "Go grab those books for me so that I may add them to my stack to be purchased."
preanimator: (unimpressed)

[personal profile] preanimator 2012-08-25 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
[Herbert purses his lips and pokes Eriq in the shoulder.] I'm not your butler. But I suppose I could point them out for you, if you like.
eighttimeshandy: (pic#4600920)

[personal profile] eighttimeshandy 2012-08-26 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
You know where they are, I have my hands full, AND I'm paying for them. Be a dear and fetch them. Please.
preanimator: (neutral)

[personal profile] preanimator 2012-08-26 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
They're your books, of course you're paying for them. [points out testily, but he will start selecting books off the shelves, taking his own sweet time about it]
eighttimeshandy: (pic#4597815)

[personal profile] eighttimeshandy 2012-08-26 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, and I am lending them to you out of the goodness of my own heart. So the least you can do is get them. All the ones you want.

[He'll be patient. For a bit.]

Can you hurry up? These aren't exactly feathers I'm carrying.
preanimator: (profile smile)

[personal profile] preanimator 2012-08-26 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
[gives him an airy look] You're bigger than me.

[Never mind that Eriq's built like a skeleton. And he's not going to get all the ones he wants, just the ones he thinks will be useful to the other boy, as well. Okay, well, maybe one that Eriq wouldn't care about. But he should read it anyway because IT'S REALLY GOOD.]
eighttimeshandy: (pic#4597431)

[personal profile] eighttimeshandy 2012-08-26 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
Your arms are thicker.

[More like half a skeleton. Or one that's been really, really stretched out.]

And they're still heavy. You're helping me carry all of these back to Da's car.
preanimator: (um)

[personal profile] preanimator 2012-08-26 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
[huffs and rolls his eyes] Fine. And how far is that? You can't exactly park that close to the Alley.
eighttimeshandy: (pic#4600920)

[personal profile] eighttimeshandy 2012-08-26 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
I knoooooooow! [If his hands were free, he'd throw them in the air. Instead, Herbert just gets treated to the way his voice gets shrieky and high-pitched when he's annoyed] What is with everyone correcting me today? I didn't just become a wizard YESTERDAY! I've been making this trip for years by myself! I know what I'm doing!
preanimator: (Default)

[personal profile] preanimator 2012-08-26 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
[snorts, and shoulder bumps the taller boy with rolled eyes, since he's got an armful of books now, too] Yes, yes, you're very grown-up, we can all tell. I was just asking a question, Eriq, honestly, stop pitching a fit.
eighttimeshandy: (pic#4597374)

[personal profile] eighttimeshandy 2012-08-26 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
[pout] I just spent all afternoon listening to Ognian Jaeger criticize my taste in books, I kind of don't want to hear it! You will put up with my hissy fit, and you will like it!

[And then he stomps his foot. Because he is an Adult.]
preanimator: (suspicious)

[personal profile] preanimator 2012-08-26 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
[blinks, then gives Eriq a look that's half disgust, half sympathy] Why on earth were you talking to one of the Jaegers? They're all morons.
eighttimeshandy: (Default)

[personal profile] eighttimeshandy 2012-08-26 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
He kept following me! [He drops his face into his books with a sob and a whimper] I couldn't get rid of him no matter how hard I tried!
preanimator: (staring)

[personal profile] preanimator 2012-08-26 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
You have to ignore them. They're like dogs with a bone otherwise, you can't give them any reaction, be boring. [Such easy advice to give, but so hard to follow - Herbert's rarely successful at that tact himself.]
eighttimeshandy: (pic#4597815)

[personal profile] eighttimeshandy 2012-08-29 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
[snort] That's not the only way they're like dogs. Ignore them, and they'll jump on top of you until you DO pay attention to them.
preanimator: (hand behind head)

[personal profile] preanimator 2012-08-29 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[wrinkles his nose in disgust] Ugh ... yes, I suppose that's true. Though I've been thinking - I don't know why they don't teach us proper enchantment, but I'm sure it can't be hard to research. If an item could be enchanted to produce some kind of force field, then it could be used outside of school and get around all the ridiculous restrictions they impose. Something triggered by an attack ...
