The Adventure of the Unexpected Guest

WHAT: John comes to visit the Holmes family.
STATUS: Completed

Sherlock didn't care much for being home. It was dull there and on the uncomfortable side of quiet. His mother had obviously had someone go through his things shortly after he'd arrived, looking for any recreational habits tucked away in the folds. He wasn't sure if he should be more annoyed at her for her lack of trust or for her imagining he wasn't very good at hiding things she had no business with. It certainly hadn't been Mycroft this time. If it had been, nothing would have been left.

The holiday had been rather awful. He hated giving in to Mycroft's insistence but it seemed to benefit him in the long run with less owls inquiring how he was if he could put on a good show for the week. They were all masters of putting on the brave face and smiling regardless of all else. Sherlock despised taking meals with them and tried to keep his forced smile encounters to a minimum by only taking breakfast at the grand table alongside his small family. He spent the rest of his time in his room or, as now, curled up in a chair outside the large fireplace with a book on potions or native plant life. Birthdays were just another day of the year that came with a pudding at supper. With school starting the next day, he had zero expectations for the day as a whole. Just another dull day at home in the company of poisonous plants and the light of the fire.
