Ah, the sound of music. It's not always a pretty sound- definitely not. While there are plenty of good bands at the festival, there are also plenty of pretty awful ones trying to make it big. But that's okay, because it's still a good time! Look at all of those stages, look at all that festival food. Four days of music, fun and awesomeness! So walk around, enjoy the music, maybe enter the singing competition they have each day.

But wait! Even if you aren't musically inclined, guess what? Shortly after arriving, you begin to feel the sudden urge to sing, too, even if you might sound like a dying whale. Eventually the urge is going to get so great that you just have to break out into song. Or you might just sing randomly throughout the day, if you give into the feelings. It really depends on your willpower! Either way, you will sing. It looks like all the spells used to make this happen have had unintended side-effects.

That won't stop you from having fun though, right?

[Thanks to a lifetime spent with Bro, Dirk's immediate reaction is to spin around. If Jane's not careful, she might get knocked in the head. The reaction, of course, is partially a reaction to being poked in one of the spots he's ticklish, but he's not about to tell that.]

Mama-

[Luckily for him, his voice squeaks halfway through the word.]

[BRB giggling for a lifetime.]

I don't think I look anything like your mother at all, actually!

[Hoo hoo, what a card.]

[At this point, Dirk wants to stop and explain that she just caught him at a bad time. In fact, that would be great. Really great. But he just keeps on singing instead, because of course he couldn't dig himself out of this embarrassing situation.]

Just killed a man, put a gun against his head, pulled my trigger now he's dead.

[Jane's seen a few of these incidents play out, though to be fair she had assumed the participants were doing some sort of flash mob and were simply advertising for a concert or something. But with Dirk, she's not so sure. Especially given the fact that Dirk of all people looks a little flustered by the words spilling out of his mouth. And then there's the content of what he's singing and, well.][Killing someone with a gun? That isn't even wizard music, that's...] Wait, is that Queen?!

[Excuse him while he clears his throat now. He meant to sing that, what are you talking about. At least he can talk instead of bursting into song like he's in a musical.]

Got it in one.

...Did you mean to do that? Or is this some sort of magical prank I haven't heard of?

[Oh goodness, someone is going to have to teach her this one. She's practically glowing with jealousy, this prank is so brilliant..]

Some combination of the two. Haven't you seen people bursting into song the whole time?

[He's had incidents with them.]

Well, yes, but I assumed it was some of that newfangled advertising or somesuch.

[She can sense (despite his efforts to hide it) that Dirk is embarrassed, so she decides she had better pay him a compliment.]

You've got a very nice voice, by the way. More suited for that song in particular than I would have guessed.

Thanks, I guess. Too bad my goal in life isn't to be a wizard pop star.

Hoo hoo, yes. You would've done splendidly.

[Aaaand she suddenly remembers why she came over!]

Dirk, I was wondering if you'd like to help me finish this? [She extends the cotton candy, smiling.] I should've gone down a size, I suppose.

[Dirk surveys it for a moment, eyebrow raised.]

That's a monumental task you've set for yourself here. Sure, I can help out.

[Jane grins and takes a piece herself, letting it melt in her mouth for a moment before she opens her mouth to--]

Call my baby lollipop.
Tell you why.
His kiss is sweeter than an apple pie!

[Jane's eyes go wide. Seriously?! This is the song she gets?!]

[Revenge tastes like cotton candy, apparently. There will be no mercy on Dirk's part, because he just starts laughing at the lyrics coming out of Jane's mouth.]

And when he does his shaky rockin' dance,
Man, I haven't got a chance!

[Jane glares at Dirk and starts swatting at his arm. Stop laughing! Stop it!]

I call him
Lollipop lollipop
Oh lolli lolli lolli...

[This is the most embarrassing thing. She's bright pink.]

[Nope, he can't stop now. He does make a valiant effort at covering it up with a hand, but it just turns into an inelegant snort by the time she gets to the chorus.]

Lollipop! [POP.

...And now she seems to be done singing so she's going to pummel Dirk mercilessly with weak, limp-wristed smacks on the arm.]

SHUT UP SHUT UP YOU SUCK SHUT UP!

[He doesn't even raise an arm to defend himself, but he does finally start to get the laughing under control now that she's done.]

Might not want to talk about sucking when you were just singing about lollipops.

[Jane turns an even brighter red and lets out a groan-growl of indignation.]

I don't even want to do that anymore, you jerk! NOT THAT I THOUGHT ABOUT-- oh, look what you made me say!

[Jane ceases her assault on his arm to bury her face in her hands.]

Oh my God, crushes are so much worse after the fact. I'm so embarrassed!

[Still, the mortification is seemingly much shorter lived as she drops her hands and sighs at him.] I was here on a date, you know. I've gotten over all that! You need not worry about errant sucking or whatnot from me. [She smirks a little, though the blush is still bright on her cheeks.] Actually, I probably should've talked to you about this a while ago, but um. I think I figured out where all that...came from.

[Time for a belated realization of how awkward he just made this.]

That wasn't where I was taking it, Jane.

[But she's still talking, so he goes quiet for a few moments to actually listen.]

Tell me if you want to. I didn't exactly mean to drag that up.

[Jane's cheeks heat, aware that Dirk's probably totally thrown by this but, well. She's been thinking about this for a while. And she can't leave him in the dark on this and still consider him one of her best friends. It wouldn't be right.]

When we were under the love potion, you were so sweet. You said things I never thought anyone would say about me because...well, I convinced myself I didn't deserve them. [She breathes out a sad sigh, eyes dropping down and away.] And to clinch it, you were-- you were essentially making an exception for me. I couldn't fathom it-- being exceptional. And I didn't want it to go away, even when the potion-induced feelings ebbed and I was left with the same pointless crush I always had.

[She doesn't say it was on Jake. It probably doesn't need saying.] Adding another on top of it felt even more useless, and I rather melancholy about the whole thing. That night at the party, I'd-- I'd been drinking, obviously, because it made things feel a little bit better. And I got to thinking that maybe we could both use a...distraction.

[From Jake. Again, the elephant is there but not discussed in the slightest.] It wasn't fair to you, of course. I-- I almost wish I was a boy so we could at least try and keep each other company like that, but that's...that's not who I am. And what I am isn't what you want.

So I'm sorry. I feel like I used you, and maybe even disrespected you.

[She glances up, meeting his eyes as best she can.] I-- I just needed to let you know.

[Dirk listens, passively, an open receptacle for Jane to unload all of her feelings onto, for the moment. When she wraps it up, he's ready to meet her eyes, though he stays silent for a few moments more.]

Using me would've been toying with my feelings and breaking my heart, Janey. And I don't think you're that kind of girl. I'm not going to blame you for having feelings, that'd be shitty. 'Sides, I wouldn't want to distract you from your date.

[Finally, he holds out a hand- not for a shake, but for a fist bump, because he's a Strider.]

Friends?

[Jane is surprised, for a moment, that Dirk doesn't have something...well, snarkier to say. Maybe about how she's hardly competition for English or something silly like that, something that Dirk would think would make her laugh, and it would, but it'd leave them both feeling a little hurt inside.

What he says instead is kind. Understanding. Maybe Dirk's been growing up a little bit, too.

She lets out a shaky laugh and bumps his fist, nodding.]

Yes, always. Always friends.

[She holds out the cotton candy again, taking a piece for herself and relaxing as it melts on her tongue.]

And that date, um. I'm not sure what to make of it, actually. Do you know Nick, at all?
