It hardly seems as if we're talking about the same person here. However, if he were to be seemingly pleasant with you for one reason or another, whether or not the harm he causes is intentional is another factor entirely.

It isn't safe to become attached to a person like that. You'll wind up hurt somehow, can't you see that?
