On occassion, I find it refreshing to pinpoint a person and study their actions. Do you find it strange?

[Nepeta thought about it for a moment.] Mom is super cool. [Nope, not biased in the slightest] She's always given me a lot of freedom. I think it's beclaws she was a lot like me when she was young. Or rather I'm a lot like she was when she was young.

[She leaned a tiny bit towards Oggie but the attendee pulled her back. Boo. Well she supposed it didn't really matter if she said this since it happened years ago and God knows pretty much every student broke the rules at some point]

She use to sneak out to the Forbidden Forest and explore the castle and all the fun things we do. I mean she's still going to be a grown-up about things so she'll still dock points and give detention and all that if we're real obvious about it but she'll be a great Head of House!

[The blunt honest was kind of surprising. She was about to automatically respond 'yes' but she gave the question a little more thought.

Didn't she sometimes do the same? Perhaps not quite in the way that he did but she certainly had her fun charting her friend's relationships, their ideas of romance, what they seemed to look for in a person or relationship.]

I guess not. But with the way you are doing it people might get the wrong idea.

[And he seems so calm as he watches her consider, knowing she had every intention of taking the easy answer. There's a small satisfaction in knowing she's taking the time to think about it.]

If they were to object, it would only serve as more entertainment for my curious mind. In fact, it is incredibly fascinating to note the manner in which reactions vary from person to person.

[This is probably the moment she should walk away but she's curious now]

What diffurent reactions have you gotten?

Sometimes, I like reading rubbish, Herbert. [Eriq sneers, not even bothering to look at which book he was indicating. He had no idea which one it was, but he wasn't about to let it show. He actually wants to impress the other boy, he has to look like he knows what he's doing] It's called entertainment. It's a thing I indulge in occasionally, and it's not like you couldn't stand to do the same.

Don't you have like, a million siblings to take care of?

[personal profile] preanimator 2012-08-25 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I hardly think it's entertaining to read misinformed tripe and know there are people out there who actually believe that not only are lethifolds are venomous, but that one drop of their fictitious poison will render the imbiber into a coma-like state from which they can only be revived by repeated attempts at impregnation by a sufficiently virile wizard. It's simply annoying. There are far more interesting things to do with one's time.

[And without so much as a by-your-leave, he'll pluck the book from Eriq's stack, holding it as though it were covered in cow dung, and replace it with a much more modest volume bound in boring grey.]
preanimator: (staring)

[personal profile] preanimator 2012-08-25 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
[Herbert looks up, startled, clutching his notebook paper to his chest and staring at the other wizard with wide dark eyes, before they narrow suspiciously.]

Were you looking at my list? [demands] That's my business!
eighttimeshandy: (pic#4597430)

[personal profile] eighttimeshandy 2012-08-25 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
......That sounds hilarious, actually. [Gosh, but he does enjoy the suffering of others! And okay, now he knows exactly which book Herbert was-] HEEEEEEEEY! Oh come on, Herbert! Where's your sense of humor? Do I have to strap you to a lab table and poke at you with things until I find it?
preanimator: (Default)

[personal profile] preanimator 2012-08-25 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
[gives what he thinks is his best haughty look, though really, it mostly just looks pinched - he needs to actually practice it in a mirror instead of just giving people aloof glares] Oh, please, Eriq, you've been wanting to do that to me since second year.
eighttimeshandy: (pic#4597374)

[personal profile] eighttimeshandy 2012-08-25 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
[Eriq will be haughty right back, then. And his expression will actually resemble haughty, because he does practice it in the mirror.] Yes, well. That's because such things should be found before they disappear too far up your ahem.

Now, if you'll excuse me... [he will just pick that book Herbert objects to so much back up and add it back to his stack. Anything that includes sex as a cure for anything has GOT to be good for a laugh. And a wank, but he pretends that he's above such things.]
preanimator: (no glasses and pissy)

[personal profile] preanimator 2012-08-25 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
[Herbert wrinkles up his nose in irritation, both at being so casually dismissed, and because he's a bit jealous of his classmate who can actually afford to buy books just for entertainment value.]

Oh, yes, please excuse me for interrupting your serious and valuable research efforts. [snippily, then looking down at his own slim stack of required books with a scowl]
eighttimeshandy: (pic#4597428)

[personal profile] eighttimeshandy 2012-08-25 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
[....Yeah, that really is a tiny stack of books. It kind of makes him feel vaguely uncomfortable in a way he can't really name.]

You know I'll share them with you, right? [Wow, he really did just blurt that out. Awkward.]
preanimator: (broody)

[personal profile] preanimator 2012-08-25 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
[Herbert's shoulders hunch in a little, embarrassed at being caught out. He tries not to let it bother him that his family hasn't got a lot of money, and his Muggle mother doesn't see the point of buying books when there's a perfectly good library at school, anyway, but sometimes ... ]

I just told you that book was rubbish, why on earth would I want to read it? [flustered and turning a bit red, not looking at Eriq]
eighttimeshandy: (pic#4597136)

[personal profile] eighttimeshandy 2012-08-25 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
[It's okay, Herbert. He may not have to worry about money, but that doesn't stop his muggle parents from really side-eyeing and questioning everything he brings home. At least Herbert has ONE parent who understands.]

[They definitely don't appreciate his Goliath Birdeater tarantula.]

[These problems are completely unrelated]

Because a laugh isn't going to kill you. And besides, you did add Arcturo's. That one's not hardly rubbish at all.
preanimator: (hand behind head)

[personal profile] preanimator 2012-08-25 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
[Well, no, Herbert doesn't really know his dad, he just lives with his mum. He does, however, have a nutty wizard uncle who gets it, and that's something! If only he got to see him for more than a few weeks in the summer ... ]

That is an excellent text, thank you very much! Very useful, and he includes theory and usage that other authors so short-sightedly leave out because of the 'implications'. [making annoyed air quotes - what he actually means to say is 'Thank you, Eriq, you are a good friend,' but probably some reading between the lines is going to be necessary here.] I used it for two essays and some personal research last year.
eighttimeshandy: (pic#4597374)

[personal profile] eighttimeshandy 2012-08-25 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[Yay, he did a good thing! For a moment, he might just have grinned like a doofus, but he catches himself quickly and whips that smile off his face, replacing it with a mask of unaffected aloofness]

If it meets your high standards, I simply MUST read it, then. [small, condescending eyeroll] Are there any other texts you INSIST that I must peruse instead of wasting my time on casual japes and tomfoolery?
preanimator: (nerdy smile)

[personal profile] preanimator 2012-08-25 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, since you ask- [Herbert starts, ignoring the sarcasm utterly, and is probably going to babble on happily here about several of what he considers excellent potions texts, as well as pointing out a small, little known philosophical and theoretical treatise on soul magic, demonstrating that he does actually pay attention to what Eriq's interested in, though there'll probably be some convoluted excuse as to why he knows what that book even is, even though it's only peripherally related to his own pursuits.

The boy does actually smile when he talks about books, exposing the little gap between his two front teeth. It's quite odd.]
eighttimeshandy: (pic#4597815)

[personal profile] eighttimeshandy 2012-08-25 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
[That wasn't the reaction he intended, but he hardly has the heart to stop Herbert when he's clearly so thrilled to show off his all his hard-earned knowledge. And also that gap is cute. So he patiently waits for the other boy to finish his ramble, only half-paying attention, even when he mentions the books relevant to his interest because-]

While that's all very nice, Herbert, what I meant was, "Go grab those books for me so that I may add them to my stack to be purchased."

Eeylops Owl Emporium

[personal profile] allamericanreject 2012-08-25 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
[Having decided that Tony's not the best to depend on for mail--great cat though he is--Alfred's decided he'll buy his mother an owl so that their correspondence is more...uniform. And so that Alfred doesn't have to ask to borrow a classmate's owl during the year.

He's looking over all the bird, trying to find one that suited the family, not just himself, and decides on a handsome barn owl, paying for it and grinning as he takes his new buddy and gives him a look over. He's never owned an owl, this is exciting!]

Now what're we going to call you~?

[Meanwhile, Maxim is trying on every combination of purple and red he can get his hands on. Clothes are wonderful, Oggie, he doesn't get why you hate this so much.]

[Currently, he's wearing a set of short kimono like robes with his red cowboy boots and posing in the mirror., scowling thoughtfully at his reflection]

Hy tink dis could be shorter, vhat do hyu tink, Oggie? Or mebbe haff a beeg bow on de beck. [He frowns, practically pressing his face up against the mirror as he pushes his eyelids up higher with his fingertips] If my heyes vere bigger, den Hy could look chust like Cousin Cielia's animes!

[Maxim is covered in frogs. No, he's not trying to smuggle them out, what are you talking about, why would you think that? He's just taking them for a walk, that's all.]

Dot's a pritty bord, Alfred!
