WHAT: There is a huge festival the whole week to let students get school supplies. People from all over are flocking to Diagon Alley for the best deals. That means you might meet new people or see old friends!

What's an acro...mantra? [Her mother looks at Twilight curiously.]

Acromantula. It's a type of giant, carnivorous spider that's also highly venomous. They aren't normally native to this region, but there's a large family of them in the Forbidden Forest at Hogwarts. Among other things.

It's really highly dangerous, which is why students aren't allowed in. Generally we study magical creatures under much more controlled conditions.

Life isn't a controlled condition. Never risk anything, never gain anything.

Sometimes you can even gain blindness! (Hehehe)

Mum! [Terezi takes a swipe at her mother with her cane. Her mother neatly dodges, cackling.]

That's why it's important to prepare yourself before any task you might be facing. Rushing in unprepared and getting yourself killed never gains anything either.

And what would you consider being prepared?

Well, first reading up on the sorts of creatures that live in the forest, what the dangers are, and how you can avoid them or keep them from harming you. And in the case of students, being accompanied by a professor who will keep you from getting in over your head.

Why's the professor necessary? If you've done the first step, what difference does your age make?

Professors are fully accomplished witches and wizards, with quite a bit more experience. It's not necessarily a matter of age, but ability.

So what you're saying is you should always be accompanied by someone with more experience.

Well in general, yes. Even for adults, it's best to undertake dangerous research with a partner.

So getting a professorial escort is really just putting the professor in danger, unless they take along a third person with more experience than them.

One of their parents, perhaps.

Well, depending on the level of experience required, I suppose... something can be too much for a student but fairly easy for a professor on their own.

[She shakes her head.] You're underestimating your fellow students. Besides, there are some things you just have to do yourself...

I'm sure they're very skilled witches and wizards for their year, but most of us have only had a few years of training.

...You do realize people can be experienced with things other than magic? Stuff like street smarts and woodlore? Those don't stop being a thing just because you've got magic. And besides that, training yourself is an integral part of any education. [She is never going to accept that kids need adults.]

Why are you so afraid of being unsupervised anyway?

It has nothing to do with fear. It's simply common sense.

If I wasn't unsupervised more often than not, I wouldn't know how to take care of myself. You've got to grow up sometime. Get rid of the training wheels.

The kid being the one who insists on having a babysitter? Fear.

Common sense dictates being aware of your limits. Being rash isn't the same as being brave, and being sensible isn't being cowardly.

No, it isn't. Common sense is why I carry a cane. It's why I study for tests and assignments.

It doesn't mean I need a fucking guard detail. [She rolls her sightless eyes.]

No, we're not. You'll never expand your limits if you don't push them. I'm advocating studying up before doing something difficult; you're advocating getting a babysitter.

Have you ever been there by yourself? Have you talked to the kids who do go there on their own?

Maybe I am underestimating it. Maybe I'm not ready to go. That doesn't mean I'm going to argue that the same holds true for everyone who hasn't graduated.
