All of the colour flees from Dave's face when he sees John. After what Bro said on the journals? He's surprised John wants anything to do with him. He can't turn and bolt now, he's already been spotted.

But that's exactly what he does, heart pounding (feeling like blood is slipping through the cracks, because what is he doing, what is he doing John is his best friend and he promised he'd never ditch him and Dave is being a total toolbox right now) as he ducks right into the bookshop and tries to get lost in the pushing throng of parents and students.]

[Despite Dave's superior speed, the cover provided by the throng of people in the bookshop also blocked his exits and dampened his ability to tell how close John was getting.

So he ends up with his back to the Gilderoy Lockhart section, with that smug asshole grinning at him from the display, thankful for his shades because he's looking everywhere but John at the moment.]
