WHO: Murdoc Ampora and ANYONE

WHERE: Murdoc's Office
WHAT: With exams coming up, Murdoc is spending more time in his office. Both because he's grading papers and because as Head of Slytherin it's his solemn duty to guide his students through hard times yadda yadda. He's there to answer questions.
STATUS: Ongoing

Exams have been coming up a long time, but Murdoc isn't surprised to see the majority students in a flurry of anxiety and fear. Despite his eagerness to watch students who failed to prepare crash and burn, he decides it would be best to extend his office hours on the off chance that students of any house need a little extra tutoring. Of course, priority falls to students in Slytherin, he's here to assist them with their big life choices and to discuss potential careers. He may or may not be a little eager to send everyone off to the Ministry, but he's interested in hearing what students believe they're capable of.

Today in particular he's come prepared. He has a large mug of very strong coffee by his side as he idly skims through some practise exam papers. His door is open, so anyone walking by will see him looking less than impressed and just a little bit bored. If you have a question, student or professor alike, now is probably the best time to get his attention.

Murdoc is sort of aware of this already. Given that he's both his DADA professor, his head of house AND his father's boyfriend, he has a vague understanding of the kind of person Dirk is. He rarely needs to worry about his reluctance to seek help, anyway. Dirk is perfectly capable and intelligent, he's hardly the type to pester Murdoc with meaningless questions.

So, when he looks up to see Dirk in his doorframe, he can't help but raise an eyebrow. He's surprised, of course! But he's also curious. If it's important enough for Dirk to come to him of his own volition, it must make for an interesting meeting.

"Strider." He half smiles, look how friendly he is!! "Is there somethin' I can assist you with?"

"Nothing pressing." It's true. He's been mulling over this for weeks and he'd be perfectly content to ponder it for several more, if he couldn't talk to Murdoc now. It's not like he wouldn't get the chance to talk to him during the summer, if any of the things his Bro has implied are true, anyway. "It can wait if you're chained to your paperwork."

Nevertheless, he steps into the room, sliding his hands into the pockets of his robes. "It's about next year, and potentially beyond that."

"Certainly not."

And with that, he's setting his quill down into his ink well and threads his fingers together. Honestly, he'd look a bit like an anime villain if his hair were a bit stranger. He doesn't want to wast the opporunity to both bond a little with his boyfriend's son and pry a little into the life of one of his favourite students.

"Have you made plans already?" He lifts that curious brow again. He's already learnt how independent Dirk tends to be, so he's eager to hear why he needs his assistance in particular.

Any head of Slytherin House is likely to come off as an anime villain at some point or another, and certainly to some of the students coming in for help, Murdoc would seem that way. But Dirk's seen Murdoc being embarrassed by Bro. By now, he's immune to any threatening vibes from this Professor, whether intentional or not.

"I have some," he admits. "Figured I should get a second opinion before I made anything definite."

Murdoc was not embarrassed by Bro. He was embarrassed by Dirk AND Bro, of course. He would absolutely hate it if he knew that his reputation for being an intimidating fuck was being ruined by Bro being a troll.

"Of course." Murdoc nods, studying Dirk for a moment before continuing. "I'd be very interested in hearin' what you have to say."

Dirk took a moment to start. It wasn't that he was looking for approval from Murdoc, exactly. Approval he'd look for from Bro, for all that he's still on somewhat awkward terms with his father. What he wanted here is to know if he was at least making an intelligent decision, something that he could actually make a career out of.

"I'm not about to go into the family business," he started off. "Not that it isn't lucrative, but it's boring. Even if Bro managed for years he still came here eventually to teach." He pauses again, as he reaches his actual idea. "I've always been interested in how spells work. So I was curious about making them."

Murdoc wouldn't be offended if Dirk valued Bro's opinion over his own, particularly since he would be offended if Cronus or Eridan tried it. Really though, Dirk. Murdoc's approval is far more important than Bro's because he's a Slytherin and Slytherins stick to their own.

"I hadn't expected you to." He answers curtly, not really wanting to go into the specifics of his boyfriend's wildly popular porn business. It's really a good thing he can't navigate the internet or they'd have even more to bicker about.

"So you're considering becoming a spell inventor?" He lifts an eyebrow. "It's a difficult line of work, but I can't say I'm terribly surprised you're interested in it." He gives him a wry smile. "It's highly dangerous, but I'm sure you know that much. Did you want me to go into specifics with you, how much do you know already?"

"I've done some research, but I'm not sure how much of it is accurate," he admitted. "Most textbooks don't always mention the person who came up with the spell, or how much trial and error was involved, if they were purposefully creating it. It's much more likely to discuss it if the spell was created by an accident, particularly if it ended horribly." He shrugged, with his hands still tucked away in his pockets.

"Mostly I'm unsure if it would be a productive use of my time," he said finally.
