Jake beamed at her, the corners of his eyes scrunching up.

"Well, good! You're supposed to feel special on your birthday." He gestured to the box with a little flourish and a shrug. "And if you like!! It's your birthday, you choose."

Jane beams. "Alright, here it goes!" She started tearing into the package, more than a little curious about what Jake would get her.

Made for her, to be precise. Inside the box was a collection of carved kitchen things-- a small-ish mixing bowl with small designs carved into the sides of it and finished with beeswax, as well as two spoons, one slotted, and in the middle of all of it, a comical wooden mustache, carved to look like waxed hair and then painted in a glossy black. He shifted his weight around awkwardly as she inspected the contents.

"I'm not the greatest with gifts, you see," he admitted. "So I just went with what I figure you might get the most use out of. The mustache is just for a laugh, though." She had seemed like she needed one, lately.
stubbornskeptic: (Hug!)

JAKE YOU PRECIOUS BABY

Jane's mouth falls open for a moment, but then she's just squealing. "Oh my goodness, Jake! This is the sweetest thing! And the mustache! Hoo hoo hoo, I love it!"

Jane holds the mustache up to her face, giggling all the while. "I can't believe you'd think to make me something like this!" She holds up the bowl, admiring the designs. "I'll use this all the time, Jake!"

She puts the box back together and leaps forward, hugging Jake tightly again. "You're the best!"

He shrugged his shoulders and held himself awkwardly, smiling anyway. He was glad she liked them, definitely, but she made it seem like it was so special that he'd thrown together an idea to make her things because he couldn't think of anything else.

"The mustache was a happy accident, I was trying to make one of the spoons fancy with it on the end, but I carved the meeting point too narrow and it broke off."

He hugged her back when she leapt at him, squeezing her shoulders a little.

"I'm glad you like them, miss Crocker," he amended. "Happy birthday."
stubbornskeptic: (Giggling)

let's be embarrassed for taking a long time /together/

She beams and takes a step back, sighing. "I sure hope I can make you and all the others just as happy for your own birthdays. Although, I suppose I've always been a bit neurotic about them thanks to my dad, hoo hoo."

Birthdays are a big deal when your main passion in life is making cakes anyway.

yes okay

He took his own step back and rubbed a knuckle under his nose for a minute, chuckling.

"You certainly always have, to say the least," he offered. Even apart from the cakes, Jane was always a delight to have around for special occasions.
stubbornskeptic: (D'aww!)

"I do hope everyone is enjoying themselves as much as I am. Have you had any cake? It's very well done!"

And she does not mean burnt!
