[Okay, not feeling so keen on acting natural now. Now he is agitated, his guilt had already been nagging at his (admittedly small) conscious, and now Rapunzel was upset.]

[Growling, he pushes himself to his feet, barreling right into Greg's personal space so that they're chest to chest]

[Maxim better take a step back, because the street kid that Greg used to be isn't going to back down, especially when Maxim is pushing things into his personal space. He's so caught up in his emotions that he missed Rapunzel's statement to him.]

And then what happens when you get back with Van, huh? You gonna dump Rapunzel like yesterday's leftovers? Because that's not how you treat someone you like! Face it Jaegar, you've never been able to keep your hands to one person and you're not gonna change now, are you? Rapunzel deserves better than to be someone's seconds, and you'd better treat her with the respect she deserves!

[Yeah, sorry Rapunzel, Maxim's not listening either]

Would one of you bloody idiots listen to me?! Maxim's right, Greg, he isn't just tugging me around! If anyone isn't being fair here, it's me! I can't be with Maxim, not really, but it's not his fault! It's just that I'm looking for a commitment, and Maxim -- like he said, he doesn't just love one person. He can't! I understand that!

Then he should know better and stop before he let things get out of control!

[Someone wants to be a big boy. Greg glowered and clenched his fist tight. He's been in a fight before in Hogwarts, and that didn't end well for both parties. Even angry, he's trying his best to restrain himself from pushing back. So far it's working. So far. But doesn't mean he's going to let the subject matter drop.]

If you love someone, then you make a decision and you stick with it. You don't just go with whoever's the flavour of the season! People get hurt when you abandon them, it's selfish and you should be ashamed of yourself. Not everyone thinks the way you do, and Rapunzel obviously doesn't, so why don't you back off before you end up hurting her even more?

Greg, shut up and listen! Aren't you hearing me? Maxim's the one who's-- Look, I messed up. I'm the one who's hurting people here, so try yelling at me! And stop not accepting what you don't understand! Merlin's beard, he isn't abandoning anyone. Maxim loves more than one person, that's all!

Oggie, shut up and stay out of this.

And what, he doesn't know that you're looking for a boyfriend who's loyal and faithful to you? He should be stopping you, instead of encouraging you to go along with this farce because he will never be the boyfriend that you are looking for or that you deserve!

If you truly love someone, then you should really reconsider whether you're really what's right for them. That's part of loving someone; accepting that you may not be the right fit, and that maybe you should take a step back instead of kissing her! Did you ever think what would happen after this little fling the two of you are having? Are you going to dump Van and go with her, or are you just going to pretend this kiss was just a little fun before you go off on your honeymoon with your boyfriend?

[Maxim doesn't even think. Greg's just been saying the same thing over and over again without listening to him, and he doesn't have the patience to keep repeating himself. Instead, he just pulls his fist back and swings it forward as hard as he can to slug the other boy across the jaw]

[Right, okay. The hitting has started. It's time someone with a more level head and more involvement in the matter at hand than Greg Lestrade takes over this discussion. Van, who's been watching for quite some time now, steels himself and walks smack into the middle of the argument before Greg can punch back.]

Stop it, all of you. This isn't the way to start the school year and furthermore, I don't like to see fighting in my common room. Greg, your worry over me is flattering but unneeded and I'd like you to please calm down and step back and realize you're not helping. The same goes for you, Oggie.

[He crosses his arms and does his best to keep his voice steady. The Prefect badge on his robes glints as he moves.]

Maxim is right. I expected this from him and I'm not surprised that it happened, though I'm a little wounded that it happened so soon. And if anyone is going to discuss it and figure out how to proceed, it's going to be he and Rapunzel and I, in private, with civil level-headed conversation.

[OK, he did not expect that punch. It hurts in more ways than one, and is a far cry from the friendly match they had in London just a few weeks ago. Greg has always known the Jaegars to be somewhat more lenient in their opinions about fights; it still does not lessen the sting that one of his few friends has actually decked him one. There's pain and humiliation and that is a combination that Greg Lestrade does not like one bit.

It's a good thing that Van stepped in when he did, because Greg would definitely have given returned the favour in spades. And lots of black and blue. As it stands all he does is wipe the edge of his mouth and spit out some blood. The glare he threw at Maxim was spiked with anger and hatred, but he took the cue from Van and took the crucial step back.]

I don't care what the bunch of you think. I'm just disappointed that you didn't think of Rapunzel's emotional well-being before you decided to make out with her. You may be fine with your boyfriend snogging other girls or boys, but Rapunzel deserves better than that, whether she knows it or not.

[And with that, he turned and left the Hufflepuff common room. To hell with the rules, he needed to go somewhere to cool his head and if he got caught so be it.]

[Oggie facepalms. Greeeg...]

[...Aaaand he gets up and follows Greg. He'll keep at a little distance, give the other Hufflepuff some time to cool off, but somebody clearly needs to talk to this boy.]

Iz not for hyu to decide! [Maxim snaps at Greg's back as he walks away.] Iz vorse dot hyu tink hyu know vhat she needs best!

[And then he turns back to Van and Rapunzel with the biggest, most pathetic set of puppy dog eyes he can manage]

Hy deedn't mean for it to heppen zo soon, really, Hy deedn't. It chust... deed. Hy only meant for efferyvun to haff a chence to get to know each odder better.

[Rapunzel has been apologizing to Van since he stepped in, but she stopped when Greg starts headed out, just... Staring.]

How would he know what's best for me when I don't even know? [She sighs and turns to the remaining boys.] It's my fault, Van. I messed up; I wasn't thinking. Maxim was just being... Him.

[Van looks after Greg and Oggie, the corner of his mouth twitching. They're going to get in trouble and it will be partially his fault for not stopping them, but there's only so much he can deal with at one time.]

He's young and I don't think he quite knows how asserting that he knows what's good for you better than you do is overstepping his boundaries and rude besides. He means well.

Look. I understand that Maxim was being him as much as you were being you, and I don't fault you for kissing him even if, yes, I am a little bit annoyed at the pair of you because you weren't thinking and there's nothing I dislike more than someone who doesn't think through the ramifications of their actions.

[Man, no wonder this kid got Prefect.]

Unless anyone has any other suggestions, I think the best solution here would be to agree that it was a one-time thing and go on our way. A single kiss can't cause much lasting damage.

Since vhen iz Hy tinkink 'bout tings? [Maxim huffs, crossing his arms over his chest and pouting at Van. Really, you should know him better than that.] Iz chust tings heppen und Hy deal vit it de best Hy ken.

[and then he adds quietly] Und vhat, mebbe, if Hy vants it to heppen again?

Again? Maxim, no, it... It can't...

[Why does this have to be so hard, when it has the potential to be so easy and satisfying... For a time, at least. She wouldn't be happy with this long-term, and even if she would, it's not fair to Van.]

I'm sorry. The whole thing was my stupid mistake. I-- [She sighs and turns to Maxim.] I do fancy you, Max... A lot. But I can't-- I don't know!
