[In her robes with her prefect badge on she makes the perfect model of a student, and Aranea can't help but smile at the utter fascination Dirk's showing the window and the view.]

It's a wonderful view, isn't it?

[He can hardly turn his head away from the window.]

It's amazing. I haven't gotten to see the countryside like this before.

[She'll just chuckle softly. She was the same her first, and even her second year after all]

You grew up in a city then? Then yes,it would be a huge change.

The best part is when we start coming up on the Castle though. Hopefully it won't be too dark this year.

I grew up in the Kensington district of London. There was a really big park right there by my flat, but it's not the same as this.

Is it really going to take all day to get there?

Oh, no, from what I know it's definitely nothing like this. Even the village I live in is more busy than the true countryside. I couldn't imagine living in a city though, the space is always nice to have, even if it's a bit more of a commute for mum.

Around about. It's usually a long trip, but it's a pleasant one. The trolley witch should come around at lunchtime, and there's always something nice to get off there.

I saw sheep a bit ago, so we're getting to be way out there. Anytime I travelled before, we usually took a plane. But I never really had much reason to leave the city because everything was there.

Oh, that's good in the very least. I'm already hungry.

Any cows yet? But that sounds exciting. I've never flown in a plane before, it does seem more comfortable than broomsticks. Being from a wizarding family of course, meant that I've never flown myself of course.

Have you tried many wizard sweets? She tends to have a good collections, but I suppose I shouldn't encourage you to overdose on sugar. This being your first year is exciting enough.

Not yet, but they might be on the other side of the train. All I've ever done is fly by plane. It's not too bad, unless you're flying somewhere far away. But at least those flights have things you can do for fun while you wait. How do you like flying by broom though? Is it easy to fall off?

Dave shared some of his candy when he first came back from school for the summer, but I have no idea if what I tried would be considered a good variety or not.

That's true. You could probably check laer, most of us are very relaxed with our compartments. Perhaps I might even be able to sneak you into the Prefects carriage, my compartment is on the other side after all. And flying by plane seems exciting. Do they really serve food, and show movies? Broomsticks are okay, but it can often be uncomfortable, and it is usually quite windy, so I wouldn't consider them a method of travel for long trips. Apparation and Portkeys can be much faster, and the discomfort isn't as long. And many use Floo these days.

Do you know what you did try? [thinking... Dave... and these shades. Peering at] May I ask if you're a Strider then? You share some familiarities with both Professor Strider and David, and you have the shades.

What's the Prefects' carriage like?

It depends upon how long the flight is! If it's really short, they're probably not going to have anything fun for you to do. But they at least give you drinks and snacks. Longer flights get meals and they play movies. Usually they're dumb movies, unless you happen to get a plane that has the televisions built into the screen in front of you. If you have that, you have the option of games and music too.

I remember a chocolate frog. It was kinda freaky at first because I didn't know it was going to move, and then I felt weird about eating it. [Oh. Wow. Yeah. Of course he is. Unfortunately he didn't relate David to his cousin. This is why his face twists into what could best be described as a frown.] How do you know what my dad looked like?
taleweaving: (The moonbeam)

[personal profile] taleweaving 2012-09-07 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Nearly identical to all the others. It's just more restricted, and that allows us a lot more space.

[She gives him her undivided attention as he explains this all, feeling very similar to the young girl who sat by her muggleborn grandfather as he explained the technology as best he could. ] Goodness. There are indeed a lot of options with trips them. And it sounds far better than any magical transportation, though I suppose the time length would be annoying to some.

Oh they're delicious! What card did you get? [She blinks in confusion as Dirk's face warps, not sure what she said wrong. Perhaps he knew of Dave Strider and didn't like the comparisons? Or... maybe not.] Your dad? I don't, I'm afraid... I was referring to David Strider, whose related to the Language Studies Professor. Did I say something wrong?

Oh, that's actually really cool. Yeah, it just really depends. The really long trips get annoying and sometimes the entertainment gets boring because you just end up wanting to be there.

[He's just going to stumble through this because he's still stuck on the usage of that name. His dad and Dave were always differentiated by David and Dave, respectively.]

My dad is the David Strider related to him. Was. They were brothers. [He's not going to cry. Nope. His shades are going to protect him from looking like a complete baby right now too.]

[She lets the conversation about planes die, for once her calm composure failing her. It doesn't take a seer to see she's hit a sore spot and instantly Aranea's mentally berating herself, even as she carefully reaches forward, taking one of Dirk's hands and gently squeezing it.]

I'm sorry, I didn't know. [And for once her words are also failing her] I suppose I should make sure to call Dav- [Bites her tongue before she can slip into the 'id'] Dave, just that, yes? I never meant to upset you and I suppose there is a lot of truth to me and my big mouth and never knowing when to properly stop.

I'm sorry.

[No eleven year old has ever tried so hard to keep his composure. He's trying so hard to act older than he is and act mature. He also knows he shouldn't get mad at her for not knowing. It's not like he wears a sticker on his forehead that reads "ORPHAN."]

It's okay. You didn't know. But... yeah. Just calling him Dave would be a lot better. Please. [His tone is a little subdued, but that's something he can't help.]

[But Aranea’s older than him, and has spent years trying to learn basic body language cues. So she can see how deep she’s cut him, and she feels so guilty. She could say that she knows what it’s like. But her father died before she ever even met him so there was no bond there. And while her grandfather’s death stung, it was also expected with what age he was. So she can’t compare.

So instead she rests her hand lightly on his forearm, giving it a small squeeze]
I can do that. It’s no problem. [And then she’ll attempt to try and lighten the mood, giving him a warm smile] Now then, would you like to see the view from the other side of the train? I’m sure if we’re quiet I can sneak you into the prefect carriage.
