Veser was not pleased. Of course, he rarely seemed to be pleased, but that was just a minor detail of his life. Really, this whole dragon thing was just…Idiotic. He couldn’t even remember exactly why he had decided to sign up, but he figured it wouldn’t be completely horrible.

Then he was paired up with a third year.

He grimaced to himself, trudging through the gardens. He knew he should go take care of this stupid dragon, and it could provide to be an excellent distraction for the moment. He glanced around the gardens, and he looked for Vriska. (Of course, it was more like wandering around until he happened to stumble across the girl.)

Vriska sat on a bench next to a rose bush, the dragon egg next to her as she scribbled away in a small journal. It wasn't the journal used for communicating with everyone else, but her own private one. If anyone happened to be snooping over her shoulder they would see that it wasn't written in English, but her native language, Ukrainian. Small drawings of spiders dotted along the edges of the paper and she was currently working on one now as she waited for Veser to arrive.

As she looked up she spotted someone wandering around nearby, also adorned in Gryffindor robes. While she had never met Veser before she was almost sure this was the guy that was supposed to be her partner. She sniffed as she watched him, not yet bothering to call him over.

It took embarrassingly long for Veser to notice where Vriska was seated, and he wandered over to the young girl. He grimaced a bit, sitting down next to her but leaving a rather large gap between them. He fidgeted a bit where he sat, worrying his bottom lip.

"So. How's Vendetta?" He finally turned to her, raising an eyebrow at her journal writing and reaching out to pick up the egg.

When he comes over she shuts her journal and moves it off her lap. "Quiet." At night she spoke to it in her own language, but Veser didn't need to know that.

She leaned back to let Veser take it, watching him as he did. "Miss it?"

He snorted, rocking the egg between his hands. "It's an egg. There's not really much to miss." He stared at the egg, curling his fingers around it. The egg was warm, and to someone like Veser who was normally cold, it felt rather nice.

"I think I might take it to be a bed warmer, though."

She rested her hands in her lap as she studied him. "Cold at night?" She had never touched Veser before so his body temperature was news to her.

"Very," he grumbled. It was an unfortunate side effect of a cold-water selkie having a kid with a warm-blooded human; he could theoretically survive in the cold but he would hardly ever actually feel warm. "The tower is ridiculously drafty, it's usually cold up there anyways."

"Just don't break it." She sniffed. Vriska preferred the cold over warm weather. "We fail it is because of you."

She reached over to tap lightly on the egg. "Do you think it hears?"

He rolled his eys, tutting at her. "I am way more responsible than you, shorty." Which is...probably a lie. Veser was the kind of guy to drop the egg and not even bother to check for cracks.

Veser stared at the girl. "Maybe? I don't think it understands what the fuck we're talking about, even if it does hear us."

She narrowed her eyes and huffed at him. "Am not short. Most likely I grow to be taller than you." Which was unlikely, but what did she care? Maybe she had a few more growth spurts left in the next few years.

"Maybe it does." Of course she had no proof, but she had a strange feeling it understood her when she spoke to it at night. "Do you speak to it?"

"Maybe, but right now? You are the shorty." He's not short, okay. He's just...Well, okay. He's short, and on top of that he's skinny as hell. He would never be manly.

He stared at the egg, once again chewing on his bottom lip, which was already cut up from all the other times he's chewed on it that day. He did speak to it, sometimes, when the dorms were empty and he just needed to talk. He would never admit that, though. "Of course not. That would be dumb."

"I am not short." She pronouced each word carefully, not that she imagined it'd do any good impressing on Veser. Not many people found themselves intimidated by a girl who spoke english well.

She stared at him in disbelief. Of course if he wasn't going to admit to talking to the egg then neither would she. "Then it will never learn your language."

"I don't think a dragon could really learn English," he muttered, shaking his head. "It's not even a real dragon! So I don't see why everyone's acting like it's some big fucking deal."

No he wasn't being grumpy, why would you say that. He just thought that this was silly and people were taking this way too seriously.

"They are smart creature. Smarter than you think." She reaches over to take the egg from him. "If you do not like it then you drop out. I take egg in your place." She shoots him a half-smile.

He scoffs, shaking his head. "God, no. That dragon would end up even worse off without me here." He looks up, staring at the sky. "Of course it's still going to end up fucked either way. Neither of us really seem to be the best with anything."

The smile dropped and she frowned at him. "Cocky idiot. You do not care even now! How is it worse without you?"

She looked away, lips pressed tightly together. A lot of things were running through her mind. "You know nothing of me."

"I know enough." He leaned back, resting his hands on the bench and shrugging. "It'd be better off on it's own, without two kids who don't even know each other and who don't know a damn thing about raising a stupid egg. What did they even expect us to do? It's not real, and how would learning how to raise an egg be useful in the first place?"

"You are wrong." She shoots him a sharp look. What did he know about being alone? But she looks away again this time to the egg.

"Is just to pass time. Keep us out of trouble, yes? Like I say, if you do not want it I will take it."

He's not going to get into a fight over this. He's not. He pinches the bridge of his nose, grimacing.

Her offer was very tempting. Veser had signed up for this stupid thing, but that didn't mean he had to do any work. "If they think a bunch of eggs are going to keep teens out of trouble the professors are bigger idiots than I thought."

She could do the work herself if he wanted to quit. She expected him to, even. Why not? Even he himself said this was stupid so why would he try to finish the task at hand?

He would have been a terrible parent anyways.

She moves to stand up, egg still in her possession. "If you do not want to be responsible then I leave now."

"There's more to being responsible than eggs." He shook his head, laughing at her rather loudly. "But if you think me not wanting to make a fool of myself for a toy is being irresponsible, who am I to stop some silly little girl with shitty English?"

"Yes, okay, make fun of poor girl who speaks your ugly language! Very original, yes!" She sneered down at him. "You may be student, but you have mind of adult. Care only for yourself, abandon all other things." She advanced on him before shoving the egg back at him, more roughly than she should have.

"Break it, disgusting boy! Break it to prove you are no fool, I do not care! Is no better than real dragon or even child to you, is it? You know nothing of responsible." Her fists were clenched at her sides as she nearly yelled at him before turning away to storm off, muttering inaudible words under her breath.

"I'm the only person who gives a damn about me!" He's yelling, standing up after her and tucking the egg under his arm. "You tell me I don't know you, like some how I can't judge you, and then you turn around and call me a terrible person? You don't know the first fucking thing about me, or my life, or anything. You're a brat who can't see that hey, maybe people have shitty lives! Maybe, I don't know, people have a God damned reason for acting like they do!"

He glares at her, chest heaving. He's already beginning to regret the outburst, but he's not going to back down from some kid.

"I know people suffer! Call me brat, but I am not ignorant to pain!" She advances on him in all her five feet glory, hands clenched by her sides and teeth grit.

"If you only care about yourself then why take on egg? Why take responsible for egg when you only care for you?"

"You're ignorant to a lot of fucking things, obviously! Knowing people suffer is different then noticing that people do and being a stuck up bitch over everything!"

He glares at her, then drops the egg on the ground. "Whatever. I am done with this shit."
