It's not that Herbert finds the whole good-looking-intelligent-boy-being-really-into-him thing so awful, it's just ... he can't see how it can possibly be real, and he's not interested in looking like an idiot when Tony comes back to his senses, or worse, when he tells the older boy he's been joking all along, and what an idiot he is for believing it.
