WHO: the music club and everyone else

WHAT: music club has its first meeting of the year!

[It might have been starting to get late in the day, but that was just fine by Marceline, considering it meant the sun wouldn't be as strong. Still, once she was out of her robes and back into the casual clothes of a black band-name hoodie, jeans and boots, she'd grabbed her guitar and found a spot on the grounds underneath a particularly shady tree.

People arriving will find her tuning her prized possession and humming lightly.]

[Lyrl is looking for a nice, open place to read when he notices Marceline and her guitar. He pauses, realizing he's never even seen an instrument like that before. It's a bit annoying how limited his experience is, which is why he bothers to stop and interrupt his plans.]

Do you know how to play that thing?

[She looks up when she hears his voice, pausing in fine tuning her guitar to give him a raised eyebrow. After a moment or so she scoffs, tossing long black hair over one shoulder and giving the guitar a strum.]

Do I know how to play this thing? This thing is my guitar. Only I'm allowed to touch it. What would I be doing owning a guitar if I didn't know how to play it?

[The second club Ib attended for the week, she poked her head through the door carefully, slightly nervous. She hadn't met anyone in the music club save for Georgia, and she wasn't even sure the older girl would be around.]

[Of course Marshall is there. He comes out carrying his own guitar case and a giant blanket. He makes his way over to Marceline and spreads the blanket out. Once that's done he takes his own guitar out and begins tuning his as well.]

Got any particular song in mind to start with?

[Rapunzel arrives with her guitar and a grin, greeting the various members she knows, and introducing herself to those she does not. She's really quite excited about this!]

Learning how to play it.

[He's completely unaffected by her attitude, possibly because it's the guitar he's interested in.]

Might I hear you play, then?

[Marceline kind of gives off that vibe, but she's pretty okay once you get to know her. She stands from where she was sitting, giving a strum and starting to go off into a song.]

[Lyrl listens patiently through the song until Marceline is obviously done. It's about as polite as he ever gets.]

Interesting. I think I shall sit here and listen while I work.

[She grins at him when he sits down near her before looking back down at her guitar, plucking a couple of strings.]

I was thinking we'd let people play their own jam for starters. See what kind of talent everyone has up their sleeve.

[Arthur doesn't make much of a show of introducing himself, but he ruffles Marceline's hair as he passes her and then takes up a spot nearby, setting a black violin case on the grass in front of him. He taps his fingernails lightly against it, watching her tuning her guitar]

[Marcline raises an eyebrow before shrugging, a small smile tugging at her mouth.]

You're welcome to hang around. We're just gonna do a small jam session. I think everyone who tried out for Quidditch is probs tired by now. [She tilts her head in greeting.] Marceline Abadeer, Slytherin 4th.

[When Rapunzel arrives, Marceline's all tuned up with her guitar and she raises her hand in greeting to the older girl.]

Hey! Here for music club?

Ah. Would this be the music club, then?

I am Lyrl Dox, Ravenclaw 5th.

[He glances down at her instrument.]

I should like to see what people bring. I have no familiarity with music.

[She swats at his hand playfully when he ruffles her hair before puffing her face up indignantly, though there was a smile on her face, leaning back slightly in her seat on the grass.]

And here I was thinking you weren't going to show up.

I thought I'd be fashionably late, but I wouldn't dream of letting you down, my lady.

[He grins slightly in return, flicking open the clasps on the case]

[That makes everything so clear now, but she can't help the shock on her face.]

Seriously? Seriously?? You've never listened to music before at least?

[He shakes his head.]

I know how to whistle, but I was not supposed to except in emergencies, so I am not well practiced.

You know I hate it when you call me that.

[Marceline rolls her eyes teasingly and blows some hair from her face, tucking it behind an ear. Though she does find it endearing of him to some degree.]

Of course I do. Why do you think I keep saying it?

[He pokes his tongue out at her - very mature, Arts - and opens the violin case, taking the instrument out]

[Wow. She can't say she's ever met anyone who's never listened to any music in his life before. She raises a hand to scratch the side of her head, tilting it as she sits back down on the ground, careful with her guitar.]

Emergencies? What, did you work in a mine or something?

No, my father has a bad habit of upsetting dark wizards, so I was raised alone by my mother. I'm quite good at not being noticed.

Because you're a butt.

[She pokes her tongue out in return, plucking a couple of strings to make sure they're about as tuned as can be.]

I see your insults haven't lost their edge.

Don't expect me to go easy on you just because you're my friend.

I wouldn't insult you by even suggesting it.

[He draws the bow gently across one of the violin strings, producing a quivering note]

Wow. Sorry to hear that, big guy. [And she genuinely is. She purses her lips together before tilting her head.] Think you could whistle along to something if I play a tune?

[Well, he wasn't expecting that.]

I could attempt it. I see no reason not to try.

Good boy, best knight.

[She pauses for a moment, plucking the same note on her guitar with practiced ease.]

[What can she say? She might be a Slytherin but she's a bit empathetic at least.]

Sweet. I'll pick something easy to start off with. How's that sound?

[More than Lyrl, probably. He tilts his head to the side in consideration.]

That is probably for the best, yes.

[And he whistles a couple times experimentally, licking his lips.]

I can but try.

[Arthur smirks briefly, then picks up the violin and tucks it under his chin. He starts playing a fast-paced Bach piece]

[She's not exactly unfamiliar with the classics but they're not really something she plays often, so she just sits back and listens, humming along.]

[They're good for warm-ups at least, and when he's done he raises one eyebrow at her]

I trust I've proven myself worthy?

[He grins back.]

That's a good idea. Besides...[He sets the guitar down beside him and flops back on the blanket and pillows his arms behind his head. no sense intimidating everyone from the get go right?

[She laughs a little bit at him.]

You make it sound like they're auditioning for some kind of reality TV show or something.

[She gives him the same kind of look and leaned back on her hands, shaking her head.]

Artie, you're way too old fashioned sometimes. Of course you're in. What do you want me to do? Knight you?

We could do that. It could be called Hogwarts Idol. And we're their judge, jury and executioner. [Still laying down he lifts a hand up pointing to the sky and imitating Simon Cowell says.]
That was terrible! Off with their instruments!

Would you? I can probably find you a sword...

[A pause, while he glances back up towards the castle, then he grins at her]

Though, I don't know if I'd trust you not to lop my head off.

[She strums a couple of times before she starts playing a nice, easy song.]

[She places the back of her hand to her forehead dramatically.]

Brave sir knight, you wound me. How could you think that this innocent maiden would be capable of such a thing as chopping off someone's head.

[He listens for a moment and then starts repeating about 8 notes over and over. It's not terrible, just terribly rudimentary.]

[A few eight notes over, she starts singing the lyrics, her voice providing a nice balance between the whistling and guitar.]

[Lyrl listens carefully, interested in how the sounds mesh together. But he doesn't alter his tune, keeping with the same safe notes until the song is over.]

That's quite a change from your last song.

Oh, my dear Lady Marceline, please do forgive my most grievous error.

[He sets his violin down to take her hand]

Sure am!

Well of course. It might seem like a love song but it's about a guy or girl who doesn't care too much about their love interest, but they matter to them when the weekend comes around. They can have fights during the week but they know they'll always make up in the end.

I've never experienced anything like that. And I don't suppose I will, as we aren't separated during the week days here.

[He sits down about a yard from her, books tucked onto his lap.]

Are songs usually focused on emotions?
