[Nods at the question, taking in John's panicked expression and trembling hand. He removes his hand from the boy's shoulder and reaches out to tap the back of John's hand, giving him a quizzical yet concerned look.]

[John tries to ignore the shade, speaking a bit more loudly than is required in an effort to speak over it.]

[Blinks and glances around, ears twitching a bit as he listens. Hearing and seeing nothing, he frowns and shakes his head, before pointing at John and tapping his own ear and eyes, trying to ask if John sees or hears anything.]

[John sighed and rubbed his eyes. After a second, it hit him. Hadn't there been a meeting or something explaining that, after his long leave of absence, Kurloz couldn't speak? He grabbed his napkin - the thought of food repelled him right now, so he clearly wasn't going to need it - and was relieved that the quill he'd tucked into one of the pockets of his robe was still there. His hand still unsteady, he offered them to Kurloz.]

[He blinks at the offered napkin and quill, lifting his hand to sign his gratitude while mouthing 'thank you' with a small smile. Taking the quill he scribbled out:]
